Windows servers

Windows server data recovery NTFS, RAID, VHDX and SQL

Deleted files, a disk that shows as RAW, a lost partition, or a damaged virtual disk. We copy the disk first and work on the copy. Your original disk is not touched.

  • NTFS, ReFS, RAID and Storage Spaces
  • We work on a copy, not the original
  • We tell you honestly what is possible
  • Physical, VPS and Hyper-V servers

Windows problems we can help with

Software problems on disks that can still be read.

Deleted files and folders

Files were removed from a share or a drive. We check the Recycle Bin, Previous Versions and shadow copies first, then scan a copy of the disk.

Disk shows as RAW or asks to format

The NTFS structure is damaged after a crash or a bad shutdown. We repair or read it from a copy of the disk.

Lost or deleted partition

A partition vanished or the wrong disk was cleaned. We look for the old layout and restore it where it is still there.

RAID or Storage Spaces problem

A disk failed or the pool shows as degraded or offline. We copy the members and rebuild on the copies.

Hyper-V or VHDX damaged

A virtual disk will not attach or a VM will not start. We check the checkpoints and repair or extract the data from a copy.

SQL Server database lost or damaged

A database is suspect or gone. We look at backups first, then at the data files, and tell you what can be brought back.

What is possible

An honest view of each situation. It is not a promise: the result depends on your disk.

Often possible

Files in the Recycle Bin

They can simply be restored. Check the Recycle Bin of every user on the server.

Often possible

Files deleted (Shift+Delete or Recycle Bin emptied) on an HDD, not used much since

Often brought back with Windows File Recovery or a scan of the disk, if nothing has overwritten them.

Rarely

The same on an SSD with TRIM

The drive clears deleted data soon after deletion. Recovery is often not possible.

Often possible

A shadow copy, Previous Version, File History or backup exists

This is the best case. Restoring is fast and safe.

Sometimes

File saved over, or changed by mistake

Possible only if a Previous Version, shadow copy or backup holds the older state.

Often possible

Disk shows as RAW or asks to format

Usually the NTFS structure is damaged and the files are still there. We read it from a copy of the disk.

Often possible

Lost or deleted partition

If nothing was written or formatted afterwards, the old partition can usually be found and restored.

Often possible

Quick format

Much of the data is usually still there on an HDD. File names and folders may be partly lost.

Rarely

Full format (Windows Vista or later)

A full format writes zeros over the disk, so recovery is rarely possible.

Sometimes

Failing disk with bad sectors, still detected

A careful copy often saves most of the data. Files on bad areas may be damaged or lost.

Often possible

BitLocker drive and you have the recovery key or password

We unlock it with your key and then recover like any other drive.

Not possible

BitLocker drive without the key

The data cannot be read. We do not break encryption.

Often possible

RAID or Storage Spaces with one failed disk

The data is usually intact on the other disks. We copy them first.

Sometimes

RAID or Storage Spaces with two or more failed disks

It depends on which disks failed. A partial recovery is possible, a full one is not certain.

Sometimes

Hyper-V VHDX damaged or checkpoint chain broken

Often readable from a copy. A broken checkpoint chain can mean partial data.

Sometimes

SQL Server database damaged or suspect

Backups give the best result. Without them, some data can often be saved from the data files.

Rarely

Files encrypted by ransomware

Without the key, encrypted files cannot be opened. Ransomware often deletes shadow copies. Backups and free decryptors for some known families are the only ways.

Not possible

Disk wiped with a secure erase tool

Overwritten data cannot be recovered by anyone.

Not possible

Disk that clicks, is not detected, or burnt

This is hardware damage. It needs a clean-room lab, and we do not do that work. Switch the disk off.

What decides the result

The same six things on every job.

Time and writes since the loss

The more the drive is used after the loss, the less is left. Stop at once.

The type of drive

HDDs keep deleted data for a long time. SSDs with TRIM often clear it fast.

How the files were lost

Recycle Bin and shadow copies are easy. A full format or a secure erase is not.

The health of the disk

A healthy disk is easy. A failing disk must be copied carefully, and parts may be lost.

Backups and shadow copies

These beat every tool. Check them first.

Encryption

A BitLocker drive can only be read with its key.

How a Windows recovery goes

The same careful order every time.

  1. 1

    Stop and describe

Stop using the drive. Tell us the Windows version, the disk or RAID type, what was lost and when.

  2. 2

    Copy the disk

We make an image of the disk and keep the original as it is.

  3. 3

    Look for backups first

Recycle Bin, shadow copies, File History, Windows Server Backup, and any backup software you use.

  4. 4

    Repair and scan the copy

We read the copy, repair the NTFS structure where we can, and scan for deleted files.

  5. 5

    Show you the result

You get a list of what was found. You check it and choose what to take back.

  6. 6

    Hand back and clean up

Files go back over a secure link or to a place you choose. We delete our working copies when you confirm.

The Windows tools we use

Well-known tools, used on a copy of your disk.

Shadow copies and Previous Versions

If they are on, they are often the quickest way to get a folder back as it was a few hours or days ago.

Windows File Recovery (winfr)

Microsoft command line tool that brings back deleted files from NTFS, best on a recently deleted file.

TestDisk and PhotoRec

Repair partitions and boot records, and carve files out of free space by type. Original file names are lost with PhotoRec.

DMDE

A well-known tool for NTFS and RAID reconstruction. It can show the folder tree of a damaged disk.

chkdsk

Repairs NTFS errors. We only run it on a copy, because it can change or remove data.

Backup tools

Windows Server Backup, File History and your backup software, if you have them.

What to know before you start

  • If the drive is an SSD with TRIM, deleted files are often gone quickly. Stop using it at once.
  • BitLocker: we need your recovery key. We do not break encryption and we cannot recover data without the key.
  • If the data was overwritten, or the disk was wiped with a secure tool, it cannot be recovered.
  • A disk that is not detected, clicks or smells burnt needs a clean-room lab, not software.
  • Running chkdsk on the original disk can make recovery harder. Please do not.

Do this first on Windows

  • Stop using the drive and, if you can, shut the server down properly.
  • Do not install recovery tools on the drive you want to recover.
  • Do not run chkdsk, format, or Reset this PC on the original disk.
  • Look in the Recycle Bin, then right-click the folder, choose Properties, then Previous Versions.
  • Keep your BitLocker recovery key safe if the disk is encrypted.

Windows data recovery: your questions answered

Can you recover deleted files on a Windows server?

Often yes, if the disk has not been written to much since. We check the Recycle Bin, shadow copies and backups first, then scan a copy of the disk. SSDs with TRIM are the hardest case.

My disk shows as RAW. Is my data gone?

Not necessarily. RAW usually means the NTFS structure is damaged, not that the files are gone. Do not format it. We read it from a copy.

Do you work on my original disk?

No. We copy the disk first and work on the copy, so a mistake cannot make things worse.

Can you recover a BitLocker drive?

Only if you have the recovery key or the password. We do not break encryption.

Can you recover a damaged VHDX or Hyper-V VM?

Often yes, if the file is still readable. We copy it and repair or extract the data from the copy.

Can you recover a SQL Server database?

It depends. Backups are the best way. If there is none, we look at the data files and tell you honestly what is possible.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size of the disk and the problem. Send us the details and we tell you before any paid work starts.

Lost something important?

Send the system, what was lost and when. We reply with the next step.
