Compliance help for Indian businesses

Indian rules on cyber security and personal data now reach even small businesses. Much of what they ask for is done on your servers. That part we can do for you.

We are server engineers, not lawyers. This page is general information and is not legal advice. Ask your lawyer or adviser what applies to your business.

The rules, in plain words

CERT-In cyber security directions (2022)

Directions issued by India's Computer Emergency Response Team under the Information Technology Act. In plain words, they ask organisations that run IT systems to:

  • report certain cyber incidents to CERT-In within 6 hours of noticing them;
  • keep logs of their IT systems for a rolling 180 days, stored within India;
  • keep their system clocks synchronised with a reliable time source;
  • for companies that provide VPS, cloud and similar services: keep subscriber records for a longer period.

Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP)

India's law on personal data. In plain words, an organisation that handles personal data is expected to:

  • say clearly what data it uses and why, and ask for consent where the law needs it;
  • protect the data with reasonable security safeguards;
  • be able to tell the regulator and the people affected when a data breach happens, when the law requires it;
  • delete data it no longer needs.

Rules change and have details and exceptions. Always read the current text or ask an adviser.

What we do on the server side

Log retention

We configure log rotation and off-server copies so your system, web server and login logs are kept for the period you need.

Time synchronisation

We set up and check NTP on your servers.

Backups you can prove

Scheduled off-server backups with restore tests, so you can show your backups work.

Patching on a schedule

Security updates applied on an agreed timetable, with a record of what was done and when.

Access control

Named server accounts, SSH keys, no shared passwords, and removal of access when people leave.

Hardening and monitoring

Firewall rules, secure defaults and round-the-clock monitoring, so problems are noticed early.

Incident help

If something goes wrong we investigate, contain it, clean up and give you a written report you can use when you report the incident.

These are things we set up and look after for you. Tell us what you need and we will say plainly which plan covers it and what is extra.

What we do not do

  • We do not give legal advice or write your privacy policy.
  • We do not certify your business, and a managed plan alone does not make a business compliant.
  • We cannot see how your business collects or uses personal data outside your servers.
